The plants chosen for this woodland terraced garden were selected to provide interest throughout the seasons. Early spring brings color from the winter hellebores, flowering dogwood and bulbs.
In this scene, Purple Smoke Baptisia (deer resistant and very low maintenance) is in full bloom and providing lots of color. The bright lavender color really stands out from quite a distance. Near the Baptisia, a grouping of willowleaf starflower with it’s ice blue flowers is also in full bloom. The red knockout roses in the foreground are just begining to bloom and a snowball viburnum is also offering some color.
Summer brings color from the hydrangea, spirea, roses and abelia. Perennials used include coreopsis, yarrow and sedum which add color from summer through fall.
Groupings of flowering shrubs were used as they add height, structure, flowering interest and have fewer weed problems than a large herbaceous perennial planting. Abelia, Spirea, Hydrangea, Knock Out Roses and Viburnums are featured and will offer color at various times during the season. Swaths of evergreens are also utilized to add structure and winter interest.
